GREENVILLE, S.C. – Junior Alexis Shaffer hit .727 with eight kills to lead the Furman volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-18) win over The Citadel Friday night in Alley Gymnasium. With the Bulldogs ahead 17-14 in the third set, the Paladins went on a 11-1 run sparked by the serves of Natalie Braun and three kills from Shaffer and two from senior Katherine Hall for the victory.
The two teams battled to a 12-12 tie in set one before Furman began to pull away for the 25-18 win. In the second set, Furman allowed Citadel to come within one point of a tie at 18-17 before ending the set with a 7-1 run for a second 25-18 victory, which then set up the winning third set.
"Both teams were looking for their first Southern Conference win," said Shaffer following the match. "We came out tough and strong, and everybody played great. We were motivated to win, and we won as a team."
Senior Kelly Kirby paced the Paladins with 23 assists and added nine digs, while sophomore Natalie Braun led Furman with 11 digs and four service aces. Sophomore Chandler Ambrester tallied a team-high ten kills in the match.
Kaona Mercer led The Citadel (5-13, 0-3 SoCon) with nine kills, while Tatum Jestila posted a team-high 14 digs. Erin Bucheri added 15 assists for the Bulldogs.
Furman (7-7, 1-1 SoCon) will face the College of Charleston Saturday at 2 p.m. in Alley Gymnasium in a rematch of the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament championship match.
