Kirby Leads Furman Volleyball Team In Tight Season Opening Loss At Colorado

BOULDER, COLO. – Simpsonville native Kelly Kirby posted 11 kills and a .526 attack percentage Friday night to lead the Furman volleyball team in the Paladins' season opening 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) loss at Colorado. 

Furman jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the first set before Colorado stormed back to tie the score at ten points apiece.  The two teams traded points back and forth before the Buffaloes pulled away for the 25-22 victory.  Colorado led throughout the second set, but the Paladins kept the game close before the Buffaloes rallied for another 25-22 win.  In a reverse of set one, Colorado posted an early 9-4 lead in the final set.  Furman was able to come within three points of Colorado, but the Buffaloes held off the Paladins for a 25-19 victory in set three.

Freshman Sarah McCarthy led the Paladins with 26 assists, while junior Carolyn Nicoletti paced the team with 14 digs.  Sophomore Chandler Ambrester recorded eight kills, and sophomore Natalie Braun tallied seven kills and seven digs in the match.

Furman (0-1) will play at #17 Colorado State Saturday at 9 p.m. EST in the second round of the Coors Rocky Mountain Challenge.
