PACIFIC PALISADES, CA -- Furman women's tennis player Monica Arguello defeated Leigh Finnegan of Illinois 6-1, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, being held this week at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Arguello, who is making her first appearance in the tournament, will face Lutflana Budiharto of Wichita State on Thursday. A junior from Lakeland, Fla., Arguello is ranked #64 in the ITA National Preseason Rankings. Last season, she was named to the All-Southern Conference first team for both singles and doubles.
At this week's tournament, the nation's top collegiate tennis players are competing in the ITA's first national event of the 2009-10 season. The qualifying draw, which began on Tuesday, features 64 players. Half of these players will earn a spot in the main draw, which begins on Friday.
