Lady Paladin Duo Advances To Flight Two Doubles Championship

Greenville, SC - Furman freshman Laura Gioia teamed with junior Jacqueline Eckert to advance to the championship match of the flight two doubles at the 19th annual Furman Fall Classic on Friday.
The Gioia/Eckert duo defeated Amanda Taylor and Liberty Sveke of Vanderbilt 9-8 (3) in a doubles marathon Friday morning, then downed Natasa Vuckovic and Grace Blakely of South Carolina 8-2 to earn a berth in the championship. Gioia and Eckert will meet Blakely Griffith and Bryce Marable of Tennesse in the flight two final Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center on the Furman University campus.
The flight one championship will feature Tennessee's Ghizela Schutte-Melissa Schaub tandem against Amanda Fish and Taka Bertrand of Vanderbilt, while flight three pits North Carolina's Alexandra Jurewitz and Hanes Harris against Wisconsin's Morgan Tuttle and Chelsea Nusslock.
In singles action Friday afternoon the Lady Vols of Tennessee went undefeated, winning a match in all six singles flights. Vanderbilt and Furman were close behind, picking up five victories apiece. The host Lady Paladins secured singles wins from Lauren Osborne, Lauren Tomory, Shannon Moore, Bonnie Baird, and Jacqueline Eckert.
Action in the 2004 Furman Fall Classic continues on Saturday at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center, with the championship round of doubles slated for a 9 a.m. start. Round two of the three round singles competition will start at 11 a.m. with the last match scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start time.
