Tar Heels Capture 12 Matches On First Day Of Furman Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, SC - The 16th-ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina enjoyed a successful first day Friday at the Furman Fall Classic Tennis Tournament, winning all seven singles matches and advancing to the championship of No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline defeated South Carolina's Christyn Lucas and Madga Wojdylo 9-7 in the first round, then topped Annie Menees and Audra Falk of Vanderbilt 8-6 to advance to the flight one finals. Mojzis and Cline will take on Vanderbilt's Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish at 9 a.m. Saturday morning in the doubles finals.

After dropping all three first round doubles matches, the host Lady Paladins bounced back to win two of three second round matches. In flight one Mary Neill Hagood and Caroline Bentley defeated 21st ranked Maria Brito and Daniela Alvarez of Clemson 8-4, while Marti Morris and Shannon Moore downed MTSU's Ana Maria Cibils and Claudia Szabo 8-1 in flight two. Bonnie Baird picked up the lone singles victory for the Lady Paladins winning 7-5, 6-4 over Nicole Beck of Wisconsin.

Action in the 2004 Furman Fall Classic continues on Saturday at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center, with the championship round of doubles slated for a 9 a.m. start. Round two of the three round singles competition will start at 11 a.m. with the last match scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start time. TMTM
