GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team will open the 2010 season Saturday when the Paladins play host to Winthrop at 1 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center on Furman's campus. The match will be the 20th meeting between the two schools. The Paladins lead the all-time series 18-1 after defeating the Eagles 6-1 last season.
Furman is ranked #72 nationally by the ITA, while Paladin junior Monica Arguello is ranked 84th nationally among all singles players. Furman posted a 17-8 record last season and advanced to the championship match of the Southern Conference Tournament for the sixth straight year. Head Coach Debbie Southern, who is entering her 26th season at Furman, collected her seventh consecutive Coach of the Year award in 2009 after guiding the Paladins to their 17th SoCon regular-season title.
