Lady Paladins Capture Southern Conference Tournament Title

Charleston, SC - Top-seeded Furman defeated number two Davidson, 4-0 to win the 2005 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship Sunday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, SC.
The championship marks Furman's second title in as many years and 13th in the school's history. Furman's Caroline Bentley recorded her second-straight tournament most outstanding player honor as she was named the tournament's most outstanding player, winning all three of her matches in the tournament in straight sets. Bentley is one of only three players in SoCon history to win the award in back-to-back years.
Furman claimed the doubles point in the match winning two of the three doubles matches. Furman's number one duo, Caroline Bentley and Mary Neill Hagood, defeated Kelly Fillow and Meghan Fillnow, 8-5. At the number two spot, Paladin netters Lauren Osborne and Marti Morris downed Meggie Patterson and Kelsey Linville, 8-4. Kim Whelan and Sarah Borkowski picked up a win at #3 doubles with an 8-4 decision over Shannon Morris and Lisa Bornt-Davis.
In singles action, Furman's Bentley, Morris and Osborne each recorded wins. Bentley defeated Patterson 6-2, 6-4 at the number two slot. At number six Osborne registered a 6-1, 6-2 win over Whelan. Clinching the match for the Paladins was Morris at number five with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Kate Levitt.
Furman will now wait until Wednesday, May 4 for the 2005 NCAA Women's Tennis Team selections to be made. The NCAA Women's Tennis Championships begins on May 13.
