Women's Tennis One Win Away from SoCon Tournament Title
April 21, 2007
Charleston, S.C. - With a 4-0 win over UNC Greensboro on Saturday morning at The Earle Tennis Center, the Furman women's tennis team is just one win away from a fourth consecutive Southern Conference Tournament title. The top-seeded Lady Paladins (15-9) will play for their 15th SoCon Tournament crown tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against No. 2 College of Charleston.
Once again, Furman claimed the doubles point with wins at number two and three. The Lady Paladins has not lost a doubles point to a conference opponent this season. Lauren Osborne and Jacqueline Eckert improved to 14-4 on the season with an 8-2 victory over Valerie Behr and Jess Eblen at flight two. Lauren Tomory and Lisa Bornt-Davis secured the point with an 8-5 mark over Courtney Akel and Whitney Miles at number three.
In singles action, Osborne posted another shutout win over UNCG's Emily Wade at number two. The second-team all-conference honoree has yet to lose a game in the tournament. SoCon Player of the Year Laura Gioia earned her 20th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Arielle VonStrolley at the top position. Tomory's 6-2, 7-5 win over Akel clinched the match and a trip to the championship for the Lady Paladins.
Furman is looking for its fourth consecutive league tournament title and 15th overall. A win will mean an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Paladins defeated CofC, 6-1, in the earlier meeting this year. Furman last met the Cougars in the conference tournament in 2004, when Furman posted a 4-2 win over CofC in the championship match.
