Furman Shuts Out Wofford 7-0

Greenville, SC - The Furman women's tennis team shut out Wofford 7-0 Thursday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center. With the win Furman improved their record to 8-6, 3-0 in conference play and captured the Pinson Challenge Trophy for the second straight year. The trophy, named in honor of Bob Pinson, will be presented to the winner of the two school's women's tennis regular-season match for 15 years.
Furman jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after capturing all three doubles matches. Furman's No.1 team of Laura Gioia and Marti Morris defeated Tara Hartness and Ellen Rogers 8-3 while in flight two Jacqueline Eckert teamed with Lauren Osborne for an 8-4 victory over Adriane Hodges and Ashley Page. Playing at No.3 Lisa Bornt-Davis and Shannon Moore followed suit with an 8-1 win over Lauren Prickett and Cayley Witzig.
As singles play began Furman captured three quick matches to secure the Lady Paladin victory. At No.1 Laura Gioia downed Ellen Rogers while at No.3 Lauren Osborne ousted Cayley Wetzig both by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Playing in flight four Shannon Moore eased by Ashley Page 6-1, 6-0 giving Furman a 4-0 lead. Lady Paladin Marti Morris expanded the lead to 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tara Hartness in flight two. Furman went on to capture the last two matches to secure the shut out. In flight five Bonnie Baird fought off a first set loss to down Adriane Hodges 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 and in flight six Lauren Tomory defeated Lauren Prickett 7-5, 6-1.
The Lady Paladins return to action on Saturday as they play host to Georgia Southern at 1:00 PM.
