Women's Tennis Extends Winning Streak With Victory Over Winthrop

Greenville, S.C. - The Furman women's tennis team posted its third consecutive victory with a 6-1 win over the visiting Winthrop Eagles at Mickel Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Paladins (4-7) swept all three doubles matches and were winners in five of six singles matches.
Furman won the doubles point for the third straight match. Sophomore Laura Gioia and junior Natasa Manojlovic improved to 8-3 on the season with an 8-7 (7-5) win over Winthrop's (2-11) Ana Paula Novaes and Patricia Coimbra at flight one. Furman's number two and three tandems posted 8-4 wins to secure the first point of the match.
The Lady Paladins were victories at the top five singles flights, winning each in straight sets. Gioia, the Southern Conference February Athlete of the Month, extended her winning streak to nine straight with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Paula Novaes at the top singles position. Sophomore Lauren Tomory has lost only one game in her last two matches, topping Paula Pereira 6-0, 6-1 at flight five. Lauren Osborne, Bonnie Baird and Jacqueline Eckert also won their singles matches.
Furman goes on the road to challenge the No. 18 Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday, March 17 at noon.
