#60 Furman Holds On For 4-3 Win Over Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, CA - The 60th ranked Furman women's tennis team came away with a 4-3 victory over Cal Poly Tuesday evening in San Luis Obispo, CA. With the win the Lady Paladins improved to 3-5 on the year, dropping the Mustangs to 4-5.
Furman jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage with wins in two of the three doubles matches. The 27th ranked duo of Laura Gioia and Marti Morris defeated Samantha Waller and Danon Beatty 8-4 at No.1 while in flight two Jacqueline Eckert teamed with Lauren Osborne for an 8-3 victory over Carol Erickson and Shannon Brady. In the flight three match Cal Poly's Sheila Lewis and Maria Malec downed Bonnie Baird and Lauren Tomory 8-5.
The scored quickly moved to 2-1 when Furman's Bonnie Baird picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Maria Malec at No.5 and Cal Poly's Shannon Brady defeated Natasa Manojlovic 6-0, 6-2 at No.6. The Mustangs then evened the score at 2-2 with Danon Beatty winning her flight two match 6-2, 6-1 over Marti Morris. The final three matches went back and forth, all three of them splitting sets. Furman pulled out victories in two of the three to give the Lady Paladins the 4-3 match victory. In flight one Furman's Laura Gioia downed Samantha Waller 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 while fellow Lady Paladin Shannon Moore battled for a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 win over Sheila Lewis in flight four. Cal Poly claimed the flight three match with Carol Erickson defeating Lauren Osborne 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Lady Paladins return to action on Friday with a 4:30 PM showdown against UC Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, CA.
