COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Paladin senior Jessica Preeg won her singles match and teamed with freshman Olivia Maurice for a doubles victory as the Furman women's team dropped a 6-1 match to 16th-ranked South Carolina Tuesday evening in Columbia.
Preeg faced Gamecock Josefin Andersson in the number four singles position. Andersson won set one, 6-1, before Preeg stormed back for a 6-3 win in the second set and a 7-6 win in the tiebreaker to seal the victory. Preeg and Maurice took a 9-8 win at the third doubles position over the South Carolina team of Rita Maisak and Adriana Pereria.
In other singles action, #38 Ana Marija Zubori of South Carolina defeated #38 Monica Arguello 6-2, 6-2 at number one singles. Gamecock Dijana Stojic beat Paladin freshman Lauren Kline 6-1, 6-2 in the second doubles spot, and #69 Anya Morgina defeated Furman rookie Michele Stanford 6-3, 6-3 at number three singles.
South Carolina's Milijana Jocic posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Furman sophomore Susan Bitetti in the fifth doubles position, and at number six singles, Pereira beat Maurice 6-2, 6-1.
South Carolina won the doubles point after Zubori and Stojic took a 8-2 win over Arugello and Kline at number one, and Jocic and Morgina teamed up for a 8-4 win over Stanford and Paladin junior Jennifer Betts in the second doubles position.
Furman (0-2) will return home to face Presbyterian at 10 a.m. and UNC Asheville at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
