No. 43 Furman Extends Winning Streak To 12 Matches With 6-1 Victory Over UNCG

GREENVILLE, S.C.. -- No. 43 Furman defeated UNC Greensboro, 6-1, Wednesday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C., to extend its winning streak to 12 matches.  With the win, Furman improves to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference, while the Spartans drop to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in league play with the loss.

The Paladins swept the doubles contests to open the match.  Junior Katarina Kozarov and freshman Julia Adams recorded a 6-3 advantage over Nancy Bridges and Erika Barquero at number one, and senior Katty Weymouth teamed with freshman Madison Dillon to beat Emily Ory and Brianna Gomez, 6-2, in the flight two match up.  At flight three, sophomore Carol Elizabeth Kerman and rookie Taylor Melville topped Sophia Adams and Eugenia Camacho, 6-3.

Furman won five singles matches, including four in straight sets, for the victory.  Kozarov, who ranks 50th nationally, held off Bridges, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(10-6) in the top-seeded contest, and Weymouth outlasted Adams, 6-3, 6-3, at flight two.  At number four, Dillon, who ranks 123rd nationally, downed Gomez, 6-0, 6-1, and Kerman defeated Camacho, 6-3, 6-3, at flight five.  Sophomore Georgie Walker entered the lineup at number six, beating Ory, 6-0, 6-1.

The Spartans scored at flight three, where Barquero defeated Adams, 6-3, 6-4.

"Our depth really showed today with the lower part of our lineup coming out and playing quite well," said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen.  "UNCG has improved a lot from the last time that we saw them, and they came to battle today.  Our players did a good job of problem solving and stepping up to the challenge."

The Paladins (15-1, 2-0 SoCon) travel to Rock Hill on Saturday to take on Winthrop at 1 p.m.
