Furman To Entertain Elon Sunday In Spring Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team will entertain Elon Sunday at noon at the Mickel Tennis Center in the Paladins' 2019 spring opener.  On Monday, Furman will play host to Georgia State at 2 p.m.

"We have had a great couple of weeks of training to prepare for the season and are eager to get out on the court and finally compete as a team," said Paladin head coach Adam Herendeen, who is in his fourth year at the helm of the Furman program.  "We have a lot of respect for both of these teams and expect both matches to be a big challenge from the very first point."

Sunday's match marks the 19th meeting between Furman and Elon.  The Paladins defeated the Phoenix, 4-3, in Elon last season, to take a 15-3 series lead.

On Monday, the Paladins and Panthers will meet for the 18th time.  Furman won last year's meeting, 4-3, in Greenville, to lead the series, 13-4.

Prior to the season opener, the team will hold a silent auction and open house on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Mickel Tennis Center.  Fans are invited to watch the team practice from 2- 4 p.m. then meet and greet the players from 4-5:30 p.m.  Fans can bid on silent auction items, enjoy appetizers, meet players and coaches, and hear about the upcoming season.

Each item in the auction has been donated, so all money raised will go directly to the Paladin team and will help fund the team's spring break trip to Florida in March.  Click HERE to view items available for auction.

The Paladins return five players from last season's team that posted a 20-9 overall record and won the SoCon regular season title for the third-consecutive season after posting a perfect 7-0 mark in league play.  Furman, which won the SoCon tournament title and went on to compete at the NCAA Championships for the second-straight year, placed five players on the All-SoCon team, including Katarina Kozarov, who was named the 2018 SoCon Player of the Year.
