GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team picked up three singles wins and five doubles victories Friday in the opening day of the 31st Annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic, being held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
In singles action, junior Katarina Kozarov topped Chloe Oullett-Pizer of North Carolina, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at flight three, and sophomore Danni Vines beat North Carolina's Cassandra Vazquez, 6-3, 7-6(2), at flight five. Junior Gabby Rodriguez held on for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 advantage over Brooke Stevens of Ole Miss. The Paladins forced a third set in four additional singles matches.
Kozarov teamed with Greene for two doubles wins at flight three. The Paladin duo bested Johanna Silva and Chelsea Sawyer of Tennessee, 8-4, in the opening round, then downed Vanderbilt's Amanda Meyer and Summer Dvorak, 8-6. Kerman and Rodriguez posted an 8-3 win over Emma Davis and Courtney Meredith of Wake Forest at flight four, and Weymouth and Vines beat Florida State's Ariana Rahmanparast and Nandini Das, 8-6, at flight two. Anna Walter teamed with Kriscunas of Ole Miss to defeat North Carolina's Maggi Kane and Cassandra Vazquez, 8-7, at flight four.
"Today was a great start to the weekend for our team," said Paladin head coach Adam Herendeen, who is in his third season at the helm of the Furman program. "We picked up some really nice wins, but more importantly, I thought we competed really hard. It is early in the fall, but we definitely played some of our best doubles today."
