No. 61 Furman Blanks Wofford To Open SoCon Championships

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The 61st-ranked Furman women's tennis team blanked Wofford, 4-0, Thursday in the Paladins' opening match of the 2014 Southern Conference Championships at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.  With the victory, the Paladins, the top-ranked team in the tournament, extended their winning streak to ten matches.

Furman captured the doubles point to open the match.  Freshman Karlee Bryde teamed with senior Amanda Murray to top Taylor Carlson and Kalli Karas, 8-4, at flight three doubles, then the Paladins' top-seeded team of junior Alex Moreno-Kaste and senior Katherine Oudin, recorded an 8-3 victory over Julia Paulson and Sarah Evans to claim the first point.

The Paladins put together three straight-sets singles wins in the middle of the lineup to advance.  Oudin defeated Paulson, 6-2, 6-0, at flight three, and Bryde bested Catherine Martin, 6-1, 6-1, at number four.  Freshman Blair Martin registered a 6-1, 6-1 win against Karas at flight five, and the remaining singles matches were unfinished.

Furman (17-5, 9-0 SoCon) will face fourth-seeded Elon Friday at 2 p.m. in the semifinals of the championship at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
