CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Senior Margaret Boyette won two matches in the qualifying singles round to lead the Furman women's tennis team Thursday in the opening day of the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament showcases the top women's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Boyette defeated Taylor Casey of Elon, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, in the opening round then recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win over Honami Yazawa of Coastal Carolina to advance to the main draw. On Friday, Boyette will face Clemson's Yana Koroleva in first round competition. Furman junior Alex Moreno will play Joana Eidukonyte of Clemson Friday, while freshman Ansley Speaks will take on Duke's Hanna Mar in other first-round match-ups.
In doubles play on Thursday, Paladin freshman Karlee Bryde teamed with Speaks to top Yasmin Franco and Jamie Grinberg of UNCG, 8-4. The duo will face Duke's Beatrice Capra and Hanna Maron Friday at 8:30 a.m. Boyette and Moreno will take on USC Upstate's Talia Rojas and Isabel Von Stryk on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
"Margaret served well and stayed poised in her matches today to pull out two wins," said Furman head coach Debbie Southern. "Our freshman duo played solid tennis but changed gears at 4-4 and won four straight games to pick up a win in their first round doubles match."
