GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman Karlee Bryde defeated Florida State's Laurence Porry, 6-3, 6-0, to place seventh in the flight six draw, leading the Furman women's tennis team in the final day of the 27th Annual Furman Fall Classic, held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
In other singles action, Furman senior Amanda Murray defeated Maggie Leavell of Vanderbilt, 6-1, 6-1, in a flight seven round robin match. Paladin freshman Ansley Speaks placed fourth in the flight three draw after dropping a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 match to Alabama's Emily Zabor on Sunday, while senior Margaret Boyette also recorded a fourth-place finish in flight six after falling to Alex Martin of South Carolina, 6-3, 6-1, in the tournament's final round.
The Furman Fall Classic featured six teams ranked in the top 34 in the 2013 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings: Alabama (11th), Clemson (13th), Vanderbilt (19th), Florida State (24th), Tennessee (31st), and South Carolina (34th). The eight-team field also included 11 singles players and six doubles teams ranked in the preseason ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings.
The Paladins will compete at the ITA Carolinas Regional in Chapel Hill, N.C., Oct. 17-21.
