WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Junior Amanda Murray won two matches in the qualifying singles round to lead the Furman women's tennis team at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships, which showcased the top women's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center this weekend.
Murray defeated Tamara Stanic of Campbell, 7-5, 6-3, then beat Winthrop's Giovanna Portioli, 6-1, 7-5, to earn a spot in the singles main draw. In the opening round of the main competition, Murray dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to Yasmine Alkema of Winthrop. Whitney Kay of North Carolina beat Paladin sophomore Alex Moreno-Kaste, 6-3, 7-6(0), in the opening round, while Campell's Karolina Chernaya posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Furman senior Lauren Kline to open the main draw.
In doubles competition, Moreno and Kline teamed up for an 8-0 victory over Scott and Kenya Colbert of N.C. A&T, then fell, 8-5, to Clemson's Yana Koroleva and Beatrice Gumulya in the second round of play.
Furman will open the spring season at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla., Jan 19-21.
