Furman Opens 2012 Fall Season At Duke, Virginia Tournaments
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team opened the 2012 fall season this weekend at the Duke Fab Four Invite in Cary, N.C., and the UVa. Fall Invitational, held at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
Paladin seniors Lauren Kline and Michele Stanford competed at the Duke tournament, which featured participants from Duke, Texas, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas A&M, Purdue, Miami, Illinois, Yale, William and Mary, and Furman. Kline picked up two singles wins, defeating Purdue's Krisztina Kapitany, 6-3, 6-0, then beating Natalia Maynetto of Alabama, 6-3, 6-3. Stanford notched a singles win over Marija Milutinovic after leading when the match was retired, 6-2, 1-0.
At the Virginia Fall Invitational, junior Amanda Murray recorded a win over Marlin Mesgarzadeh of William and Mary in the A-1 Singles Draw after leading when the match was retired, 6-3. She also picked up a default win over William and Mary's Nina Vulovich. Junior Katherine Oudin defeated Dana Oppinger of Marshall, 7-5, 6-2, in the A-2 Singles Draw.
In doubles action, Murray and Oudin teamed up for an 8-6 win over Sydney Smith and Leeza Nemchinov of William and Mary in the A bracket, while Furman senior Jenny Porter and sophomore Kelly Sullivan defeated the Tribe's Nina Vulovich and Smith, 8-5, in the opening round of the B draw.
The Paladins play host to seven teams at the Furman Fall Classic next weekend in Greenville, S.C.
