College Of Charleston Tops Furman in SoCon Semifinals

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston downed Furman 5-0 Saturday to earn a berth in Sunday's Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship match.  Due to inclement weather, the match was moved to the Charleston Tennis Center and began with singles play.

The Cougars (24-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Jenny Falcone topped freshman Alex Moreno-Katse, 6-1, 6-2, at number five, then Katie Lee beat sophomore Amanda Murray, 6-2, 6-1, in the sixth-seeded match-up.  At number two singles, College of Charleston's Kelly Kambourelis dropped the first set to junior Michele Stanford but rallied to pull off a three-set victory, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

After building a 3-0 lead in the match, CofC picked up two points almost instantaneously to earn the win.  Samantha Maddox battled for a three-set victory over sophomore Margaret Boyette (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) at number four, and Christin Newman beat junior Lauren Kline 7-5, 7-5 in the top-seeded match seconds later to give the Cougars the win.

Furman ends its season with a 14-10 overall mark.  The College of Charleston will look for its fourth-consecutive Southern Conference championship Sunday when the Cougars take on UNC Greensboro in the title match.
