Furman Sweeps Appalachian State To Open SoCon Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Third-seeded Furman swept No. 6 Appalachian State, 4-0, Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.

The Paladins earned the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Sophomore Margaret Boyette and freshman Kelly Sullivan combined to defeat Blakeley Bean and Kim-Lea Dinh, 8-0, in the top match, while freshman Alex Moreno-Kaste and junior Michele Stanford defeated Ellie Linsell and Jennifer Ansari, 8-2 in the third-seeded contest.

Furman continued to control match play in singles, as Katherine Oudin picked up a quick 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Jennifer Ansari at number two singles. Moments later Moreno-Kaste earned a win in the number four position, blanking Jessica Thaggard, 6-0, 6-0. Boyette secured the team victory with a win in the number three spot, as she downed Gabriela Celi, 6-1, 6-0.

The Paladins (14-9) advance in the tournament to face No. 2-seed College of Charleston at 3 p.m. Saturday at Patriots Point.  Appalachian State closes out the season with a 12-12 overall mark.
