Greenville, S.C. - The seventh-seeded Furman Lady Paladins will open play in the 2007 Southern Conference Softball Tournament Wednesday when they face second-seeded College of Charleston in a 10 a.m. matchup in Greensboro, N.C.
Wednesday's game marks the fourth straight SoCon Tournament first round meeting between the Lady Paladins and Cougars. Charleston topped seventh-seeded Furman 9-1 in 2004 before downing the eighth-seeded Lady Paladins 4-0 in 2005. Head coach Dana Jenkins' club gained revenge last season by edging the second-seeded Cougars 4-1 in the opening round of tournament play.
Charleston (33-24, 14-7 SoCon) swept a three-game series from the Lady Paladins April 14-15, at Pepsi Stadium. Furman holds a 27-25 advantage in the all-time series with the Cougars.
Furman (17-33-1, 7-13 SoCon) made an improbable run to the SoCon Tournament finals a year ago before falling twice to Georgia Southern in the championship round. In 2005, Furman shocked the league by overcoming an opening round loss to CofC and winning three straight games to reach the final day of the tournament.
