Winthrop Uses Seven-Run Second To Eliminate Furman, 11-1

Knoxville, Tenn. - Winthrop tallied 11 runs on 10 hits and took advantage of four Furman error to cruise past the Lady Paladins 11-1 in an elimination game Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Knoxville Regional at Tyson Park.

Furman got on the board first in the top half of the first inning. Amber Kiser reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a passed ball. Abby Robertson sacrificed and reached on an error allowing Kiser to score from second. Stephanie Cushing drew a walk and Megan Jaudon moved the runners to second and third with a groundout. Winthrop pitcher Cari Wooldridge got Brythe Blankenship to pop up to short before Lana Mackey flew out to deep centerfield to retire the side.

Tessa Thomas opened the Winthrop half of the first with a double down the left field line. After moving to second on a groundout, Thomas scored on Stephanie Reid's sacrifice fly to center. After three straight walks to load the bases, Mackey got out of trouble getting Mallory Hogan to line into a fielder's choice.

Winthrop exploded for seven runs in the second inning to open up an 8-1 lead. Lisa Kingsmore singled in the first run of the inning before Reid reached on an error allowing another run to score. Jenny Scrymgeour followed with a two-run single to up the lead to 5-1. After a throwing error, Laura Hill tripled in two runs and scored on Magee's single to cap the rally.

Four hits and a costly Furman error led to three more Eagle runs in the third as Winthrop finished off the 11-1 victory.

Lana Mackey (9-14) took the loss for Furman allowing four runs on three hits in 1.1 innings while Vanessa Williams failed to retire a batter and allowed four unearned runs on two hits in relief.

Cari Wooldridge (16-5) earned the win for Winthrop allowing an unearned run on one hit in three innings. Izzy Trottier pitched the final two innings allowing just one walk.

Magee went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI while Hill and Scrymgeour each collected two hits.

Furman finishes the season 21-36-1 while Winthrop improves to 49-17. The Eagles will face North Carolina at 6:30 p.m. with a trip to the Regional finals on the line.
