Furman Drops Series Finale At Chattanooga, 6-2

Chattanooga, Tenn. - Ashley Frizzell and Brooke Loudermilk combined to allow no earned runs and fan 12 Furman batters as Chattanooga downed the Lady Paladins 6-2 in the finale of a three-game weekend series Sunday at Frost Stadium.
The Lady Mocs raced out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Jeannie Cochran singled to plate Tara Temby who reached on an error and moved to third on a sacrifice and wild pitch. Ashley Cuttichia delivered the big blow of the inning, a two-run double to left field, to cap the second inning surge.
UTC extended the lead to 6-0 in the third. Alyssa Edwards singled to open the frame and scored on Tembey's one-out double to right field. After Lady Paladin starter Lana Mackey hit back-to-back batters and was relieved by Blake Murray, Laci Upchurch drew a bases loaded walk to force in the second run of the inning and Cochran singled down the right field line to plate another.
Furman got on the board in the top of the fifth. Blake Murray singled with one out and moved to third when Amber Kiser reached safely on a throwing error. Abby Robertson followed with a RBI single to score Murray. After a double steal by Kiser and Robertson, Stephanie Cushing trimmed the lead to 6-2 with a sacrifice fly to score Kiser.
Frizzell tossed five innings allowing just two unearned runs while striking out sox to earn the win. Loudermilk entered the game in the sixth and fanned all six batters she faced in relief. Cochran and Cuttichia each collected two hits and batted in two runs for the Lady Mocs.
Mackey suffered the loss for Furman to fall to 7-13. She gave up three earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.
The loss drops Furman to 16-32-1 overall and 6-12 in Southern Conference play. Chattanooga improves to 33-26 overall and 14-4 in league action.
Furman returns home next weekend to host Western Carolina in the final Southern Conference series of the season. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m.
