Homers Lift 18th-Ranked Hokies Over Furman In Game One, 3-1

Blacksburg, Va. - Caroline Stolle and Stephanie Savre belted back-to-back homer in the bottom of the fifth to lift #18 Virginia Tech to a 3-1 victory over Furman in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader at Tech Softball Park.

Furman (16-28-1) jumped on top on the top of the third inning. Amber Kiser opened the inning with a bunt single and moved around to third on a throwing error and passed ball. Stephanie Cushing lined a single up the middle off of all-american pitch Angela Tincher to give the Lady Paladins a 1-0 lead. A base on balls to Megan Jaudon and a single by Lana Mackey loaded the bases, but Tincher fanned Danielle Franklin to get out of trouble.

Virginia Tech (39-13) answered quickly in the bottom of the third. Callie Rhodes reached on an infield single and stole second. Caroline Stolle laced a two-out single to left and Stephanie Savre walked to load the bases. Kelsey Hoffman followed with a single through the left side to even the game at 1-1. Mackey got Charisse Mariconda to fly out to center to end the threat.

Stolle put the Hokies in front with a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Savre made it back-to-back homers with a shot to left field to up the Virginia Tech lead to 3-1. A walk, error and single up the middle loaded the bases with two outs before Mackey worked out of more trouble getting Kelsy Rokey to foul out to second baseman Brythe Blankenship.

Tincher registered the win for the Hokies to up her record to 30-4. The junior fanned 11 Lady Paladins and issued four walks while allowing one run on six hits.

Mackey (7-12) suffered the loss allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings in the circle. She fanned three and walked three batters.

Amber Kiser paced Furman at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run. Stolle went 3-for-3 with her 10th homer of the season for the Hokies.

Furman returns to Southern Conference play this weekend when it travels to Chattanooga for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with the series finale set for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
