Furman Tops Elon 4-1

Elon, NC -- Jessica Mathis pounded a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning as Furman held on for a 4-1 win over Elon. For Mathis, the round-tripper was her fifth of the season and second of the weekend. With an 11-4 victory over the Phoenix on Friday, the Lady Paladins take the weekend series.

Vanessa Williams (11-9) earned the win for Furman throwing a complete game, and allowing just one unearned run and striking out four. Samatha Schroeder took the loss for Elon, pitching seven innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Furman (24-29, 5-10 SoCon) broke through in the top of the third inning as Blake Murray led off the inning with a double to right center field. Murray moved to third on Mathis' sacrifice bunt and came home on Amber Kiser's RBI single.

The Lady Paladins double their lead in the sixth inning. Megan Jaudon hit a two-out double, and scored as Amber Nelsen reached on an error.

Elon (19-20, 5-6 SoCon) scored a run in the bottom of the frame as Tracy Dahlen reached on a fielder's choice, and moved to second on Debbie Zeigler's groundout. Dahlen later scored as Jaimie Rao doubled to center field.

Abby Robertson reached on an infield single, setting up Mathis' two-run shot to left field.

Seven Furman starters recorded a hit in the game, with Murray batting 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

Furman returns to action on Tuesday as the Lady Paladins travel to face Georgia in a mid-week doubleheader.
