Box Score

Statesboro, Ga. - Samantha Russo's single through the left side in the bottom of the eighth plated Aubrey Tweatt for the only run of the game as Georgia Southern edged Furman 1-0 to complete a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Eagle Field.

Georgia Southern downed Furman 3-2 in game one.

Tweatt opened the inning with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lyndsey Hopkins before Russo lined the game-winning hit to left.

Furman, who stranded 13 runners in the game, threatened to grab an early lead in the fourth inning. Brythe Blankenship opened the frame with a double down the left field line and Lana Mackey followed with a base on balls. After a line out to left, pinch hitter Lynn Parmer singled to load the bases. Georgia Southern hurler Logan Free got the Eagles out of trouble, however, fanning Blake Murray and inducing an Amber Kiser groundout.

Furman (12-17-1, 2-3 SoCon) again loaded the bases in the eighth on a Brythe Blankenship single and walks to Lynn Parmer and Danielle Franklin. Reliever A.J. Street (4-4) fanned Murray and Kiser to end the threat.

Street, who entered the game in the sixth, pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win. Katie Smith, Michelle Beasley and Russo each collected two hits apiece for the Eagles (16-19, 3-2 SoCon).

Murray took the loss for Furman to fall to 6-9 on the season. She allowed just one run on nine hits in 7.1 innings while notching seven strikeouts.

Furman and Georgia Southern conclude their three-game series Sunday with a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
