Late Rally Lifts Georgia Southern Over Furman In Extra Innings, 3-2

Statesboro, Ga. - Maria Laurato scored on a throwing error in the eighth inning to give Georgia Southern a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Furman in a game one of a Southern Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Eagle Field.
Trailing 2-0, Georgia Southern plated a run in the bottom of the sixth to trim the margin to one. Lindsey Hopkins reached base on an error to start the bottom of the seventh. After moving to second on a sacrifice, she scored on a two-out single from Robyne Saliga to force extra innings.
Laurato opened the eighth with a double. Katie Smith singled to short and Stephanie Cushing's throw sailed into the dugout allowing Laurato to score the winning run.
Furman took an early 1-0 lead when Amber Kiser led off the game with a triple to left field and scored on Abby Robertson's single to right field. Robertson scored on an error in the third to up the lead to 2-0.
Melissa Laliberte improved to 6-7 allowing just one earned run on seven hits for the Eagles. Laurato went 3-for-4 with a double at the plate.
Lana Mackey (6-7) suffered the loss for Furman despite allowing just one earned run in seven plus innings of work. She fanned four batters, walked three and allowed seven hits.
Robertson went 3-for-4 for the Lady Paladins while Jaudon collected a hit and drew three walks.
Georgia Southern improves to 15-19 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon. Furman falls to 12-16-1 overall and 2-2 in the league.
Game two of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. Furman and Georgia Southern conclude their three-game series Sunday with a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
