Lacey Swarthout and Brittiany Johnson combined on a two-hittter as Chattanooga downed Furman 10-1 to complete the sweep of a three-game Southern Conference softball series Saturday afternoon at Jim Frost Stadium.
Swarthout, 17-6 on the season, struck out six Lady Paladin batters without allowing a walk while surrendering just one hit in four innings of work. Johnson followed with a scoreless innings to protect the victory.
The Lady Mocs got things started with a three-spot in the bottom of the first inning. Jeannie Cochran led of the frame with a walk and stolen base. Tembey followed with a single to drive home Cochran and give Chattanooga a 1-0 lead. After walks to Melissa Ramirez and Leslie Barron, Brittany Whittier singled through the left side to score two runs and up the lead to 3-0.
Following a Ramirez RBI single in the second, the Lady Mocs struck for four runs in the bottom half of the third. Furman starter Rachel Henley issued a lead off walk to Barron, Ashlan Clarkson singled and Robyn Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
Amanda Hoiness singled to center to drive in the first run of the inning and Cochran was hit by a pitch to force in a run and up the lead to 6-0. Tembey then delivered a two-run single through the right side to score Hoiness and Johnson and chase Henley(5-13) from the game.
Chattanooga upped its lead to 10-0 in the fourth before Furman scored an unearned run in the ffith for the final 10-1 margin.
Henley suffered the loss for Furman allowing eight runs in 2.1 innings. The Kingston, Tenn., native gave up six hits and issued five walks.
Tembey and Whittier paced Chattanooga at the plate. The duo each went 2-for-3 with three RBI to secure the series sweep and push Chattanooga to 28-11 overall and 6-0 in league play.
Furman, 9-24 overall and 0-3 in the league, travel to Athens, Ga., to face the nationally-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
