March 2, 2007
Woodstock, Ga. - Stephanie Cushing belted her fifth home run of the season and Lana Mackey tossed a complete game to lead Furman past Georgetown 6-4 in the opening game of the Buzz Classic Friday morning at the Twin Creek Softball Complex.
Furman jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the first inning by taking advantage of three Georgetown errors. Amber Kiser reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. Jaudon singled to score Cushing and Mackey registered an RBI single to plate Jaudon. Brythe Blankenship capped the inning scoring on a dropped ball at first with two outs.
Cushing, 1-for-2 with a pair of runs, belted her fifth homer in 13 games in the top of the second to extend the lead to 5-0.
Georgetown moved within two in the bottom of the third plating three unearned runs. A hit batter and error gave the Hoyas two runners on with no one out. Following a pop out, the runners moved to second and third on a passed ball. A fielder's choice allowed Hoya pitcher Sarah Kamenski to score and Katharine Lang scored on a throwing error by Jaudon. Samantha Peters lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Jadig Garcia to cap the three-run rally.
Abby Robertson stretched the lead to 6-3 in the top of the fifth drawing a bases loaded walk. Georgetown bounced back with an RBI single from Katherine Incantalupo in the bottom of the sixth, but Mackey retired the final four Georgetown batters to claim the win.
Mackey (4-2) limited the Hoyas to only one earned run on five hits while fanning five batters. Jaudon went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lady Paladin who stranded 10 runners.
Kamenski (0-5) suffered the loss allowing six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work. She walked four and struck out one. Reliever Jennifer Connell held Furman hitless in 2.1 innings in the circle.
