Long Ball Powers Paladins to Sweep of ETSU

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Lindsey Bert belted a grand slam on the second pitch of a resumed game two and AnnaRose Borrelli sent one over the right-field fence in the eighth inning of game three to lift the Paladins to a series sweep of ETSU on Sunday. With the wins, the Paladins now sit at 29-10, 3-3 in SoCon play, while the Bucs fall to 13-20, 1-7 in SoCon play.

In the series' game two, the Paladins led 7-2 on Saturday after scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth when play was halted due to rain. When the game resumed on Sunday, Lindsey Bert knocked the second pitch she saw over the fence in right for a grand slam, her fourth homer of the season, giving the Paladins the runs needed to end the game after five innings with an 11-2 final. Emily DeMonte earned her 11th win of the season in the second game of the series, tossing five innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with a strikeout.

In the series finale, the Bucs took an early 1-0 lead in the second, after two walks and a single. Bert then struck out the finale two batters of the inning to limit the ETSU damage to just one run. In the bottom half of the inning, AnnaRose Borrelli sent her second homer of the weekend over the fence in left-center to tie the game at one.

Both pitchers dueled equally, until the Paladins put runners on in the sixth and seventh but couldn't scratch across a run. After inducing three-consecutive popups in the top of the eighth, Bert singled to open the bottom half of the frame. Then, following a strikeout and a fly out, Borrelli continued her aggressive hitting, sending the first pitch she saw over the fence in right, giving the Paladins' the 3-1 win and their third-straight walk-off homer of the weekend.

Bert earned her second win of the weekend in the circle in game three, throwing eight innings of three-hit, one-run softball with nine strikeouts and two walks. She also went 2-for-2 with two walks at the plate, while Borrelli went 3-for-4 with two HR and three RBI.

The Paladins are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Charleston Southern for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
