College Of Charleston Holds Off Furman In Holy City Showdown, 6-4

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Charleston jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on to down Furman, 6-4, in the Paladins' final game of the day on Friday afternoon at the Holy City Showdown at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Dexlie Inman put the Cougars in front with a solo homer in the third inning and Lexee Emanuel doubled to drive in CofC's second run an inning later. In the bottom of the fifth, Kelly Sinclair doubled the lead with a bases loaded single before Yari Felix stole home to up the margin to 5-0.

Furman answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Casey Bigham drew a leadoff walk and Candace Johnson worked a two-out walk ahead of Marissa Guimbarda's two-run double to right-center that broke up Izzy Berouty's no-hit bid.

The Paladins' AnnaRose Borrelli opened the top of the seventh inning with a solo homer to left field, her fifth of the season, and Emma Ogburn was hit by a pitch. After a pair of pop outs, pinch hitter Cammy Pereira doubled over the leftfielder's head to drive in pinch runner Elizabeth Pedersen and bring the potential tying run to the plate. Berouty, however, got Caroline Cash to ground out to second base to end the game.

Senior Lindsey Bert (11-4) took the loss for Furman allowing six runs on 11 hits in six innings, She walked three batters and fanned five. Berouty picked up the victory to improve to 10-2 on the season by limiting the Paladins to four runs on three hits in seven innings.

Felix went 3-for-4 to pace the Cougars' 11-hit attack, while Taylor Dupree, Sinclair and Inman tallied two hits apiece. Borrelli homered and walked to lead the Paladins at the plate.

The win improved the Cougars to 13-7 and the Paladins, who dropped a 7-6 decision to Wright State earlier in the day, slipped to 18-6.

Furman returns to action in the Holy City Showdown versus Norfolk State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
