Bert Powers Furman Softball Past Marshall, 3-1

Spartanburg, S.C. -- Senior Lindsey Bert tossed a complete game, fanned 10 batters and delivered an RBI double to power Furman to a 3-1 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd in softball action Friday afternoon in the Spartan/Paladin Invitational at Cyrill Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.

The win marked Furman's seventh triumph in its last eight games and improved the Paladins to 9-3 on the season. Marshall dropped to 4-6.

Bert, a native of Tallahassee, Fla., put the Paladins in front in the top half of the first inning by following Candace Johnson's walk with an RBI double down the left field line to give Furman a 1-0 lead. The left-hander cruised through the first three innings before the Thundering Herd put runners at second and third with nobody out in the fourth inning, but Bert got a popout to second base, strikeout and popup to shortstop to escape the jam.

The Paladins doubled their lead in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally. Brittany Houston reached on a two-out single and moved to third base on Caroline Cash's single to right field. Cash swiped second base and Houston sprinted to the plate with Furman's second run when the throw to second skipped away from the Herd's shortstop.

Marshall got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on Aly Harrell's pinch-hit, RBI single to center field, but Bert struck out Taylor McCord to strand runners at second and third.

In the top of the sixth, Johnson started another Furman rally with a leadoff single to right field and scored two batters later on Hannah Reynold's double into the left-center field gap.

Bert retired six of the final seven batters she faced to up her record to 4-2 in the circle. She allowed just one run over seven innings and walked only one batter while striking out 10.

Johnson went 1-for-2 with a single, walk and two runs, while Cash registered two hits for the Paladins.

Abigail Tolbert took the loss for Marshall to fall to 0-3 on the season. She allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits over five and 2/3 innings.

The tournament continues tomorrow at Pepsi Stadium in Greenville with Marshall playing Presbyterian at noon. Furman will take on the Blue Hose at 2 p.m. before entertaining Marshall at 4 p.m.
