Greenville, S.C. -- Furman junior Emily Demonte has been tabbed as the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Monday by the league office.

The Sumter, S.C., native went 2-0 in the circle and posted a 0.68 ERA over 10.2 innings of work on the opening weekend of the season as Furman fashioned a 2-2 record against stiff competition at Auburn's Plainsmen Invitational.

In the season opener on Friday, Demonte earned the start and allowed just one unearned run over five innings of work to pick up the victory in Furman's 3-1 triumph over a Marshall Thundering Herd squad that won 42 games a year ago and ranked No. 31 in the NCAA RPI. The right-hander allowed only five hits and walked one batter while striking out five in the opener.

On Saturday, Demonte entered in relief with Furman trailing Wichita State, 4-0, in the second inning. The preseason second team All-SoCon choice limited the Shockers to just one earned run over 5.2 innings of work and picked up her second victory of the weekend when senior AnnaRose Borrelli belted a two-run, walk-off homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to rally Furman for an 8-7 win.

For the weekend, Demonte surrendered just one earned run on 11 hits over 10.2 innings, while walking three batters and fanning seven. She also went 2-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and two walks at the Plainsmen Invitational.

Furman returns to action on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader versus the Presbyterian Blue Hose in Clinton, S.C. The Paladins open the 2018 home schedule on Friday, February 16, against Colgate. The doubleheader at Pepsi Stadium versus the Raiders is slated to start at 3 p.m.
