Presbyterian Sweeps Doubleheader From Furman 6-1, 5-4

Greenville, S.C. -- Kelsie Sanchez and Hope Rogers each homered in both ends of a doubleheader to propel Presbyterian to a 6-1, 5-4 sweep of Furman in the Paladins' home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.

GAME 1

In game one, Sydney Seigler limited Furman to one run over seven innings and the Blue Hose belted three home runs to claim a 6-1 victory.

Sanchez put PC in front with a solo blast in the top of the third inning before Furman's Candace Johnson pulled the Paladins even with an opposite field blast in the bottom of the fourth. Kersten Legacki and Madison Longanecker opened the fifth with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Sanchez's sacrifice fly put the Blue Hose back in front and Jenna Harris singled to up the margin to 3-1.

Harris started a rally with a two-out single in the top of the seventh and Rogers followed with a two-run clout. Erin Ruff upped the PC lead to 6-1 when she made it back-to-back blasts for the Blue Hose.

Seigler (1-0) scattered seven hits over seven innings and issued only one walk while fanning two Paladins. Harris and Rogers each collected two hits to pace PC's 10-hit attack.

Sophomore Lindsey Bert (1-3) took the loss for Furman. She gave up six runs on 10 hits over seven innings, while walking two batters and striking out five. Johnson went 2-for-4 with the solo blast to lead a Furman offense that stranded seven runners.

GAME 2

In the nightcap, PC built a 5-1 lead and held off a late Furman rally to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 5-4 decision.

Sanchez homered to leadoff the game and Furman answered when Brittany Houston walked and scored on AnnaRose Borrelli's single in the bottom of the third inning to knot the game at 1-1. Megan Anderson led off the fourth with a base on balls and pinch runner Jonnie Petree scored on Legacki's line drive double to left. Pitcher Katie Brown followed with a two-run blast to stake the Blue Hose to a 4-1 lead and Rogers opened the top of the fifth with a solo shot to up the advantage to 5-1.

Furman put together a rally in the bottom of the fifth as Sieara Bishop opened the frame with a single and scored two batters later when Borrelli delivered a towering two-run homer to left field. After Hannah Reynolds singled, pinch runner Sarah Windham advanced to second base on a wild pitch and third base on an Andrea Abbatiello single before racing home on a throwing error by the catcher following a failed squeeze attempt by the Paladins.

With two outs in the seventh, Reynolds started another Furman rally with her third hit of the game, a double over the leftfielder's head. Abbatiello worked a walk, but Brown got Taylor Collins to pop out to second base to end the game.

Brown (1-0) picked up the victory after surrendering three earned runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work.  She fanned three batters and issued three walks.

Alex Sappington took the loss for Furman after allowing four runs on five hits in three-plus innings in the circle. Freshman Emily Demonte gave up just one run on four hits in four innings of relief.

Rogers and Legacki each tallied two hits for PC, while Borrelli and Reynolds each went 3-for-4 to pace Furman (1-5)

The Paladins continue their homestand this weekend when they co-host the Upstate Invitational at Pepsi Stadium. Furman faces Akron and Savannah State on Friday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively,  before battling Oakland at 1 p.m. and Kent State at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Zips and Paladins cap tournament play on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
