Lady Paladins Set For First Annual Carolina's Cup

Sept. 8, 2005

Greenville, S.C. -- The Furman women's soccer team returns to action this weekend when it takes part in the first annual Carolina's Cup at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C. The Lady Paladins open tournament play at 5 p.m. Friday against the Charlotte 49ers before battling the Clemson Lady Tigers in a 3:30 contest Sunday afternoon.

The Carolina's Cup, put together by the head coaches at Clemson, Furman, South Carolina and Charlotte, has been created to be an annual event that rotates its location each year among the four participating schools. It is hoped that the event will raise the profile of the four women's soccer programs, attract soccer fans in the region and develop the natural rivalries between the four institutions. Furman will host the event for the first time in 2006.

"We are excited to be a part of the Carolina's Cup and I know Clemson will be an excellent host for the inaugural event," said Lady Paladin coach Andrew Burr. "This tournament will provide great competition between several regional rivals and we are excited about our chance to host in 2006."

Furman, ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA South region rankings and 14th in Soccer Buzz's Southeast region poll, is coming off of a 1-0 upset victory over 10th-ranked Ohio State on Sunday at the Nike/Dayton Flyer Invitational.

Senior Andre'a Morrison, who scored the lone goal in Furman's victory over the nationally-ranked Buckeyes, leads the Lady Paladins and ranks first in the Southern Conference with four goals in four matches.
