Lady Paladins Place Five on All-SoCon Team, Furman Picked Second in Preseason Poll

Greenville, S.C. -- The Furman Lady Paladins had five players, the most of any league school, selected to the preseason All-Southern Conference soccer team and league coaches voted Furman second in the conference's preseason poll, it was announced on Wednesday. Seniors Andre'a Morrison, Katharine Kelley, Nicky Darling, Erin Sanders and Andie Hinshaw represent Furman on the 13-player All-SoCon squad. UNC Greensboro, the 2004 regular season SoCon champions, garnered six first place votes and 94 total points to edge Furman with five first place votes and 93 total points. The College of Charleston was picked second followed by 2004 SoCon Tournament runner-up Davidson. Chattanooga, Appalachian State, Western Carolina, Wofford, Elon, Georgia Southern and The Citadel rounded out the poll. Morrison, a forward from Kernersville, N.C., netted a team-high nine goals and added four assists to lead Furman with 22 total points in 2004. The 2003 SoCon Player-of-the-Year posted the tenth highest points toal in the Southern Conference despite missing several matches due to a knee injury. Morrison earned 2004 SoCon Tournament honors after leading Furman past Elon, College of Charleston and Davidson on its way to an NCAA Tournament berth. Nicky Darling, a midfielder, totaled six goals and three assists while splitting time between forward and midfield as a junior. The Coralville, Iowa, native earned second team All-SoCon and all-tournament honors while netting game-winning goals versus East Carolina and Appalachian State. A native of Raleigh, N.C., midfielder Katherine Kelley earned first team All-Southern Conference accolades and Soccer Buzz All-South Region third team honors as a junior. Kelley notched four goals on the season, including the game-winner in Furman's 3-1 SoCon title clinching victory over Davidson. Senior defender Erin Sanders collected three game-winning goals and tallied 10 total points in 2004. The Charlotte, N.C., native earned team MVP honors following the team's fourth NCAA Tournament berth. Goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw recorded eight shutouts in 19 matches in 2004 to move into first on Furman's career shutouts ledger with 25. The Raleigh, N.C., native paced all SoCon keepers with 98 saves and allowed just one goal in three conference tournament matches to help Furman claim the league title. Furman opens the 2005 regular season on Friday when it travels to the University of Northern Iowa for a 7p.m. match.
