Hinshaw, Morrison Earn Southern Conference Postgraduate Scholarships

Greenvile, S.C. - Furman senior soccer players Andie Hinshaw and Andre'a Morrison were named among the Southern Conference's seven Postgraduate Scholarship recipients for the 2005-06 academic year, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.

"Furman University and the women's soccer program are very proud of Andie and Andre'a for what the have accomplished," said Furman head coach Andrew Burr. "They are not only outstanding athletes who have set records on the field during their time at Furman, but they have made their mark in the classroom and in our community as well."

Hinshaw, a goalkeeper from Raleigh, N.C., will receive the Sony Graduate Scholarship from the Sony Corporation. Hinshaw is a two-time All-Southern Conference selection and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2005. She has also been a member of the SoCon honor roll and academic all-conference teams, carrying a 3.8 GPA while double majoring in political science and Spanish.

Hinshaw holds the SoCon record with 36 career shutouts as a goalkeeper for the Lady Paladins, as well as holding multiple school records. She has been an active volunteer at the Laurel Baye Nursing Home and with the Greenville County Disabilities Board while also tutoring at a local high school. Hinshaw will be entering law school in the fall of 2006.

A forward/defender from Kernersville, N.C., Morrison will be receiving the Renaissance Agencies graduate scholarship. Morrison has maintained a 3.5 GPA while majoring in health and exercise science in the pre-medicine program. She is a two-time All-Southern Conference selection 2003 SoCon Player-of-the-Year and two-time SoCon tournament most valuable player selection.

Morrison has been named to the SoCon Academic All-Conference team the last three years and was tabbed a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2005. She has been active with the Ronald McDonald House, Relay for Life and various honor societies while also tutoring at the local high school. Morrison plans on pursuing higher education in public health to practice preventative medicine.

The senior duo led Furman to two Southern Conference Regular Season titles and two league tournament titles while helping the Lady Paladins earn two NCAA Tournament berths over their four-year careers.

The seven senior student-athletes receiving the scholarships and will be recognized at the Southern Conference Honors Dinner on May 31 in Hilton Head, S.C. The Postgraduate Scholarships are part of the TIAA-CREF Academic Awards Program.
