Knoxville, Tenn. - The 20th-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols netted two goals in the first 16 minutes to down Furman 2-0 in NCAA Women's Soccer Championship first round action Friday night at Regal Stadium.

The Lady Vols improve to 14-4-2 and advance to face the winner of tonight's Charlotte vs. Clemson match in Sunday's second round match. Furman finishes its season at 16-6-1.

Tennessee wasted little time taking the lead tallying their first goal just 52 seconds into the match. Furman's Ashley Creavalle slipped trying to clear a ball down the left side and Kylee Rossi dribbled into the box before setting up Mick Imgram for a tap in on the right side of the box.

The Lady Vols upped the advantage to 2-0 at 15:06. Tanya Emerson found Rossi alone at the top corner of the box. The SEC Offensive Player-of-the-Year chipped a shot just inside of the far post over the head of Lady Paladin keeper Briana da Mota to double the lead.

Furman threatened in the opening minutes of the second half. Emily Krankowski turned the corner on the right side of the box, but Tennessee keeper Jaimel Johnson deflected her shot clear of the near post. Anna Betton and Krankowski broke away on a two versus one later in the half, but had their final pass cut out. Da Mota kept Furman in the game with several second half saves, but Furman could not solve Johnson and the Tennessee defense.

"I felt like we gave them a 15 minute grace period at the beginning of the match and they made us pay," said Furman head coach Andrew Burr. "In the second half, we played to feet well and created some chance, but its tough to climb out of a 2-0 hole."

Johnson saved three shots for the Lady Vols while da Mota stopped two shots for Furman. Tennessee held a 15-5 edge in shot attempts and 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.
