Senior Rachel Fry notched her 14th career match-winning goal in the 80th minute to help Furman rally past the College of Charleston for a 2-1 victory in Southern Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point Athletic Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
With the victory, the Paladins improved to 11-6-1 overall and 5-4 in Southern Conference play. The Cougars fell to 10-5-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the league.
Trailing 1-0 with under 15 minutes remaining, Fry set up Sara El-Shami for her third goal of the season at the 75:04 mark to knot the match at 1-1. Less than five minutes later, Katya Gokhman assisted as Fry netted her sixth goal of the season to give Furman a 2-1 lead at 79:41.
Fry's 14th match-winning goal of her career ties her with former Paladin Melissa Turner for second on the school's career list. Emily Turgeon holds the Furman record with 20 match-winning goals.
Each team attempted six total shots while Furman held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars earned three corner kicks to the Paladins' two attempts.
Freshman Jessica Smith tallied a pair of saves in goal to register her ninth victory for Furman. Erin Smith stopped three shots in goal for the College of Charleston.
Saturday's match was originally scheduled for Friday evening, but was moved to the following day due to heavy rains and wet field conditions.
The Paladins cap their trip to Charleston, S.C., on Sunday when they visit The Citadel for a 1 p.m. match.
