Five-Goal Flurry Leads Lady Paladins Past Georgia Southern 5-0
Oct. 20, 2005
Statesboro, Ga. - The Furman Lady Paladins exploded for five goals, including three in a nine-minute span, to down the Georgia Southern Eagles 5-0 in Southern Conference women's soccer action Thursday afternoon in Statesboro, Ga.
After a relatively quiet first 43 minutes, Furman ended the scoring drought on a goal by freshman Rachel Fry. Fry dribbled uncontested down the middle of the field for 25 yards and blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that bested Georgia Southern goalkeeper Laura-Ashley Harris.
The Lady Paladins wasted little time in scoring their second goal, coming 26 seconds into the final period. Senior Tara Marker drove home the first of her two goals on the afternoon at the 45:26 mark and just over seven minutes later, senior Andre'a Morrison tallied her team-leading 13th goal of the season. Morrison deflected in a header from senior Katharine Kelley.
"It was a great feeling to get going and score some goals today," said Marker, following the Lady Paladins third straight SoCon shutout. "Starting with Tuesday's match against Western Carolina, we seem to have gotten in a flow. Everybody is doing a good job of playing the ball to each other's feet and we have been able to create a lot of chances."
Marker notched her second score of the night in the 60th minute on a header and sophomore Gena Villari capped off the scoring at the 83:54 mark taking a pass from Emily Krankowski and beating the Eagle keeper for her fourth goal of the season.
Furman outshot the Eagles 30-5 in the match, including 14-0 in the first half. The Lady Paladins held an 11-5 edge in corner kicks attempted.
Senior Andie Hinshaw made three saves in posting her eighth shutout of the season and her fifth blanking in the last six matches. Harris, making her first start since September 3, had five saves for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern (3-12-1, 2-5) returns to action Sunday afternoon traveling to Elon for a 1 p.m. match. Furman (11-5-1, 6-1-1) also plays on Sunday, hosting Wofford at 5 p.m.
