Furman Blanks Chattanooga 2-0
Oct. 2, 2005
Greenville, SC - Katherine Kelley scored two goals, and Andie Hinshaw made eight saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season as Furman downed Chattanooga 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
"Chattanooga was a very well coached and organized team," said head coach Andrew Burr. "We had to work hard to get our chances, but we were able to capitalize and get on the board."
Chattanooga forced the early action in the seventh minute as Diana Jallo hit a 30 yard free kick that forced a save out of Lady Paladin goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw.
Katie Tucker played a through ball to Andrea Morrison in the 18th minute, but Morrison's attempt to chip Lady Moc goalkeeper Stacey Matthiessen was just high.
Furman got on the board at the 27:03 mark off a corner kick. Gena Villari played a ball into the penalty area that was flicked to the far post by Kate Myatt. Katherine Kelley's first touch half-volley found the upper corner at the far post for her second goal of the year.
Kelley's goal was the sixth match-winner of her career, tying her for ninth in Furman history.
The Lady Paladins carried the 1-0 lead into halftime despite being outshot 7-6 by Chattanooga. The Lady Mocs forced Hinshaw into five first-half saves, while Matthiessen recorded two stops in the first period.
Furman had a scoring opportunity in the 51st minute as Morrison beat her defender and was in alone with the keeper, but Matthiessen came off her line and made a sliding save on the shot.
Emily Krankowski beat a defender and was one-on-one with the Chattanooga, but a sliding save by Matthiessen resulted in a Furman corner kick.
On the ensuing free kick, Erin Sanders collected the ball at the penalty spot and sent a left-footed shot toward the goal. The shot beat the Lady Moc goalkeeper, but Lisa Becht saved the ball off the end line.
Kelley nearly added her second goal of the match in the 68th minute as her shot off a free kick from 40 yards was pushed over the crossbar by Matthiessen.
Furman added an insurance goal at the 87:03 mark on Kelley's second goal of the match, a penalty kick after a foul in the penalty area. Kelley now has three goals on the season.
The play was set up as Rachel Fry and Chattanooga defender chased a ball into the penalty area. The defender played the ball back to Matthiessen who misplayed the pass, allowing Fry a clear run at the goal. Matthiessen brought down Fry from behind, meriting a red-card and a penalty kick for the Lady Paladins.
Chattanooga held the advantage in shots 16-13, though Furman goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw was rarely tested. Furman held a commanding lead in corner kicks 7-1.
Furman improves to 7-2-1 on the season, 2-0-1 in the Southern Conference. Chattanooga falls to 4-7-0 overall, 1-2-0 in conference action. Furman returns to action on Thursday as the Lady Paladins play host to Western Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
