Sept. 22, 2008

Box Score

Spartanburg, S.C. - Martha Hall scored in the 92nd minute on an assist from Lucy Martin to propel Furman to a 1-0 overtime victory over USC Upstate in the Paladins final non-conference game Monday night at County University Soccer Stadium.

The win moved Furman to 6-2-1 on the season while USC Upstate fell to 2-5-0.

Martin played a through ball in front of Hall who rounded her defender and beat the Spartan keeper from inside the six-yard box with a shot at the right post at 91:34 to give the Paladins their third straight victory. The goal marked the fourth of the season for the freshman from Knoxville, Tenn.

Furman outshot the Spartans 21-9, including 10 shots on goal, but USC Upstate keeper Brittany Daughtry notched nine saves. Martin almost put Furman ahead midway through the second half with a shot off of the cross bar from 20 yards and senior Rachel Fry has several shots on frame that were turned away by Daughtry.

A hand ball in the box with 8:48 remaining in regulation gave Furman its best chance to take the lead, but Margaret Antonik's penalty kick bounced off the cross bar just out of the reach of the keeper and was cleared from the box.

Freshman Jessica Smith improved to 4-0-1 in goal for Furman. The Franklin, Tenn., product made four saves, including pushing a pair of dangerous chances over the cross bar.

Furman opens Southern Conference play on Thursday when it hosts the Davidson Wildcats at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
