South Carolina Edges Lady Paladins 2-1

Columbia, S.C. - South Carolina's Erin Sullivan scored on a 30-yard shot less than two minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 tie and propel the Gamecocks to a 2-1 victory over the Furman Lady Paladins in women's soccer action Monday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
Darcel Mollon opened the scoring for South Carolina in the 26th minute. Courtney Cobbs dribbled down the right side, fired a cross into the six-yard box and Mollon headed it past keeper Andie Hinshaw at the 25:11 mark.
Furman notched an equalizer just 15 seconds prior to halftime. Tara Marker collected the ball at midfield and passed ahead to Emily Krankowski who sent a long ball over the top to Andre'a Morrison. The senior from Kernersville, N.C, ran onto the pass and slotted a shot in the lower-lefthand side past keeper Lindsay Thorstenson to even the match at 1-1.
Sullivan tallied the eventual game-winning goal for the Gamecocks at the 46:55 mark on a 30-yard blast into the upper lefthand corner off of an assist from Jessi Swaim.
Thortenson earned the win in goal for South Carolina while recording two saves. Hinshaw collected four saves in the loss.
South Carolina held a 10-7 edge in shots and 4-3 edge in corner kicks, but was forced to absorb several late Furman attacks. Sophomore Katie Tucker has Furman's best chance for a late equalizer with 12 minutes remaining. After being led with a pass from the top of the box, Tucker's sliding missed wide right.
Furman,1-1 on the season, returns to action on Friday when its faces the University of Dayton in the opening match of the Dayton Flyer Invitational in Dayton, Ohio. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
