Spartanburg, S.C. -- Furman netted a pair of first half goals to blank Wofford, 2-0, in the regular season finale for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
With its fourth straight win, Furman (10-6-0, 5-4-0 SoCon) finished in a three-way tie for third place in the Southern Conference standings and clinched its eighth consecutive season with 10 or more wins. The Paladins, who earned a first round bye in the SoCon Women's Soccer Championship, will be the No. 5 seed and travel to face No. 4 seed Western Carolina in quarterfinal round action on Saturday, October 27, at 7 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C.
"We talked about playing our best soccer at the right time of the year, and we feel like we're doing that having won four straight and five of our last six," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "I was proud of our team for taking care of business on the road today, and we will work hard to prepare for a tough test at Western Carolina next Saturday."
The Paladins netted two first half goals to secure their 10th straight victory over the Terriers. Just 12:46 into the match, freshman Isabella Gutierrez was tripped in the left side of the box and junior Caitlyn Reilly slotted her penalty kick past Wofford goalkeeper Maria Mon for her third tally of the season.
After Faith Hauberg came close to doubling the lead when her floating cross was pushed off of the right post in the 30th minute, Erin Houlihan upped the margin to 2-0 with her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 35:10 mark. The freshman collected the ball on the right side of the box and lined a low shot that deflected off of the goalkeeper and trickled into the corner of the net.
Junior Kellsey Weaver recorded three saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season for the Paladins, while Mon stopped nine shots for the Terriers.
Furman dominated possession and compiled a 20-10 margin in total shots and an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal.
