Freshmen Propel Furman Past The Citadel, 3-1; Paladins Earn Third Straight Win

Greenville, S.C. -- Freshman Isabella Gutierrez netted two goals and freshman Grace Baghdady added a goal and an assist to propel Furman to a 3-1 victory over The Citadel in Southern Conference women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium.

With its third straight win, Furman improved to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in league play, while The Citadel fell to 7-8 overall and 1-6 in the SoCon.

After a scoreless first half, the Paladins grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 45:42 mark as Ellie Laxer played a pass to Gutierrez and the Statesboro, Ga., native drilled a shot off the underside of the crossbar from 25 yards out. Gutierrez doubled the lead with her third tally of the campaign at the 77-minute mark. Erin Houlihan and Baghdady advanced the ball down the right wing and into the box before Gutierrez poked a shot inside the near post for her second goal of the day.

The Citadel answered 42 seconds later as Taylor Diggs got on the end of Mel Mikoy's free kick to trim the margin to 2-1, but Furman answered with its third score of the day at 84:38. Kristian Leone slid a pass through the middle to Baghdady who slotted her shot under The Citadel goalkeeper Kelly Brahmbhatt for her second tally of the season.

Furman finished with a 16-11 edge in total shots and 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, while improving to 7-2 at home this season.

Kellsey Weaver recorded three saves to earn the victory for Furman and Brahmbhatt stopped two shots for The Citadel.

The Paladins conclude the regular season on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they face the Wofford Terriers at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
