Greenville, S.C. -- Senior Virginia Poe scored on a header in the 76th minute to break a 1-1 tie as Furman rallied past Mercer to claim a 2-1 Senior Day victory in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

With its third win in its last four contests, Furman improved to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in league play. Mercer dropped to 8-5-4 overall and 3-2-2 in the SoCon.

"It was a very blue collar effort by our team today," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "We overcame the early goal, created chances of our own and were able to finish off the game. It was a great way to reward our seniors on Senior Day."

Mercer jumped on top 1-0 off the opening kickoff as Abigail Zoeller chipped a pass over the Furman back line and Payton Schurr fired a shot into the left-hand corner of the net just 11 seconds into the match.

The early deficit proved to be a wakeup call for the Paladins and Furman found the equalizer off of a corner kick at the 20:02 mark. Erin Houlihan headed the set piece towards goal and it deflected off the leg of a defender and onto the crossbar before Stephanie Arrington's rebound effort crossed the line. It marked the senior's second goal of the season.

Furman dominated the chances over the final 45 minutes and netted the go-ahead goal at the 75:53 mark on Poe's second tally of the season. Freshman Faith Hauberg played a long cross into the box and Poe made a lunging effort to head the pass off of the underside of the crossbar to give the Paladins a 2-1 lead.

Kellsey Weaver recorded two saves for the Paladins to earn the win, while Jordyn Ebert stopped three shots for Mercer.

The Paladins posted a 15-7 edge in total shots and 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Furman concludes its regular season home schedule on Tuesday when it hosts The Citadel in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Stone Stadium. Tuesday's match was originally scheduled for last Thursday, but was postponed by Hurricane Michael.
