Greenville, S.C. -- Courtney Hendrickson netted her first goal of the season less than seven minutes into the match to carry Samford to a 1-0 victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's soccer action Friday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

The victory pushed the Bulldogs to 5-5-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play, while Furman slipped to 5-5-0 overall and 0-3 in the SoCon.

Ella Baggett bounced a shot off of the cross bar that rebounded to Hendrickson near the top of the box and the senior floated her shot over traffic and into the upper left-hand corner at the 6:33 mark to stake Samford to the early lead. Grace Sommi nearly doubled the Samford lead in the 23rd minute when her header banged off of the cross bar and the Bulldogs forced Furman's Allie Cutler into three saves in the final 17 minutes of the opening period.

Furman pushed for the equalizing goal in the opening minutes of the second half as Caitlyn Reilly and Ellie Laxer each forced Samford's Stephanie Westaway into saves. Reilly's effort in the 65th minute just cleared the cross bar from the left side of the box and Laxer threatened again in the 75th minute, but Westaway pushed her goal-bound shot off of the left post for a Paladin corner kick.

Westaway finished with four saves to earn the shutout for the Bulldogs. Cutler stopped three first half shots and substitute Kellsey Weaver recorded four saves in the second half for Furman.

The Paladins finished with a 14-12 edge in total shots, while Samford managed an 8-4 advantage in shots on target.

Furman continues its homestand entertaining Chattanooga on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Stone Stadium. The Bulldogs will visit Wofford on Sunday afternoon.
