Greenville, S.C. -- Jessica Powell netted a first half goal and Samantha Britt added a tally less than 10 minutes into the second half to lift Presbyterian to a 2-0 victory over Furman in non-conference women's soccer action on Thursday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The loss, Furman's first in 12 contests against the Blue Hose, dropped the Paladins to 2-1-0 on the season, while PC moved to 1-0.

"Presbyterian came out and earned the win tonight," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "They finished their chances and just outplayed us tonight. We have Maryland coming in here on Sunday morning so we'll see how our teams reacts and if we can refocus and play the way we are capable of playing."

Powell was left unmarked at the top of the 18-yard box and blistered a shot to the right corner at the 34:27 mark to put PC in front, 1-0, after Furman nearly grabbed an early lead minutes before on a Virginia Poe header. The Blue Hose strengthened their advantage at 54:09 when Frances Whitesides ripped a shot that was kicked away by Paladin goalkeeper Kellsey Weaver, but Britt pounced in the loose ball and slotted a shot under Weaver to double the margin.

The Paladins tried to mount a late attack as Rachel Shah fired a shot that was pushed off of the cross bar and Abby DeMare made a dangerous run with the ball to the top of the Blue Hose six-yard box, but Furman was unable to crack the scoreboard.

Alyssa Leaman made fives in goal to earn the win, while Weaver stopped one shot for the Paladins and midfielder Jenny Allen saved another goal-bound effort off the line.

Furman managed a 15-6 edge in shots and 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Paladins took 10 corner kicks without surrendering one to PC.

Maryland visits Stone Stadium to take on the Paladins at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased beginning one hour prior to kickoff at the Stone Stadium gate or online at
